The Irish Construction Industry generates 48% of the waste produced in Ireland. This key fact is the driving force behind the cross disciplinary multi-stakeholder creative research project – Demolition Takedown. Instigated by core funding from the Creative Ireland Climate Action Fund, and further supported by the Building Change project, Demolition Takedown is led by SABE TU Dublin lecturers and Islander Architects co-directors Ciaran Molumby and Laura Carroll. Throughout Spring 2024 Ciarán and Laura ran an elective module bringing students from Architecture and Property Economics together to consider the causes and consequences of demolition and waste in the construction industry. In parallel with this, supported by Creative Ireland, they engaged multiple stakeholders from industry and the architectural profession in critical discourse about the topic. This work culminated in a large scale installation and series of events as part of the IMMA Ireland Earth Rising Festival in September 2024. The project continues to stimulate necessary discussion about the motivations and impacts of contemporary demolition practices and has been influential in the TU Dublin SABE curriculum change discussions through Building Change. It has also laid the necessary groundwork for future sustained cross disciplinary collaboration across the school and faculty. www.demolitiontakedown.ie
