Dr Steve Larkin and Helen McFadden (TU Dublin graduate SABE graduate) were recently announced as the winners of the SOM Foundation European Research Prize 2024. Their project “Coastal Register: Research and Design of Nature-based Solutions for Wetland Water Security,” aims to lay the foundation for efforts to protect and restore coastal wetlands along the western seaboard in County Mayo asking the research question: How can architectural methods and interdisciplinary collaboration support the implementation of nature-based solutions for water security? The research embraces multidisciplinary nature based solutions as well as engaging with local community stakeholders. Growing out of design research Helen undertook as a student in the school, the project will now give other SABE students the opportunity to engage in this work. It demonstrates that research informed education, in turn reinforces a cycle of applied societally engaged research, which is a key tenet of the Building Change curriculum project.
