This Year 3 UL pilot was deeply invested in Building Change as an inter-university project with Year 3 UCD. It is a response to a critical need to develop design studio curriculum that offer coherent responses to the climate emergency. Here we provide a UL perspective.
We explored the theme of co-operative housing in the context of re-introducing a Rundale agri-environmental land management system of farming alongside housing that is not about ownership. We proposed a settlement of up to 10 houses and associated land management in three locations: One based on farming and restoration at the north-east of the island where there are the ruins of a previous Rundale system; One based around farming and fishing at the Main Island Jetty / Grace O’Malley Castle area; One based on farming and tourism near a Neolithic farm at the south-west of the island.
